‘You are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it’ (1 Cor 12:27)
Maybe some of us have grown up going to Church. Maybe some of us have tried it and didn’t like it. Maybe some of us have never even thought about it.
In the Bible there is no such thing as ‘going to Church.’ You can look as hard as you like, but you’ll never find a verse that says ‘then Paul went to Church, and only just made it back in time to avoid burning his lunch.’
This is because the Bible tells us that, when we become Christians, we become a part of the Body of Christ – in other words, we become the Church. Church isn’t something we go along to and sit through for an hour on Sunday – it’s something we are a part of. It’s all about being , not just going.
Hebrews 10:25 says that we shouldn’t give up meeting together – to encourage each other on. Being a Christian & following Jesus isn’t something we’re designed to do alone. That’s why God planned for us to become a part of the Body of Christ – to join together and spur one another on – to help each other towards the finish line.
It’s worth looking through the book of Acts and some of the letters in the New Testament to see what sort of things the Church did and was known for – they ate with each other, they sold their belongings to help each other out when they were struggling to get by, they worshipped, prayed & talked about the Scriptures & Jesus, and the amazing things he did and was doing in them together. Then they shared that with other people – otherwise we’d probably not have a Church today!
So, if you’re not part of a Church yet, maybe it’s time to get yourself connected in to a community that is all about Jesus. Don’t become consumers of events and services, just chasing after the things you like from one place to the next or one Church to the next. Become a part of the Body and add your bit. Each one of us is a part of it – and without us playing our part there is something missing.
